
Website Nature's Nursery
Purpose:
The Foster Volunteer will assist Nature’s Nursery in the care of orphaned wild animals at their home. They will care for the animals until they are old enough to be returned to the center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attend Nursery training session provided by Nature’s Nursery to learn the appropriate way to work with orphans of all species of native wild animals
- Keep an appropriate space in your home for the foster animals in your care that is free of children, pets, smoke, stressful noises
- Calculate the proper amount of food based on the Young Animal Care Protocol
- Feed via syringe, tong, or tube, based on animal
- Keep enclosures clean and provide dry/fresh food as required by age of baby
- Bring babies to the center to get weights on a regular basis to check progress
- Work with staff/other fosters to work through any concerns (loose stool/constipation, not gaining weight, etc.)
- Minimal handling and interaction to prevent them from becoming comfortable with people
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Volunteer in the NICU/Nursery for one season or be a volunteer for one year
- Attend Volunteer Orientation and training once per year
- Know that these animals can bite and scratch
- Keep animals separated from household pets and children. A separate room or bathroom is necessary as they can get out
- Must commit to feeding them multiple times per day– for an average of 2 to 7 weeks (about 1 and a half months). This varies by species.
- Up to date Tetanus vaccination
- Rabies vaccination not necessary, but would be helpful
- Be willing to adopt, support, and communicate the mission of Nature’s Nursery
Time Commitment:
- Must commit to feeding them multiple times per day– for an average of 2 to 7 weeks (about 1 and a half months). This varies by species.
