Purpose:   

The purpose of this program is to provide 16- & 17-year-old students with volunteer opportunities beyond Junior Volunteer duties, teach responsibilities associated with having a volunteer job, educate youth on native wildlife care, and the opportunity to help Nature’s Nursery with its daily operations, and be a fun and enriching experience for you. Any volunteer under 18 will not be allowed direct contact with the native wildlife due to liability but will be assisting Day Keepers with their daily checklist. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Assist Day Keepers in either the Observation Room, Education Ambassador care (inside or outside), or Outside Rehab areas.  
  • Be a runner for the Day Keeper 
  • Clean enclosures, prepare food and water dishes 
  • Wash dishes 
  • Remove garbage, sweep and mop (inside) 

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Ages 16 & 17 
  • Attend Volunteer Orientation and training once per year 
  • Able to read and follow directions  
  • Must work well with others as well as independently  
  • Comfortable with seeing/handling feeder rodents and other feeder animals, often cut up  
  • Able to handle harsh animal smells and cleaning products   
  • Able to bend, squat, and lift/carry 10-15lbs comfortably  
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Up to date Tetanus vaccination 
  • Be willing to adopt, support, and communicate the mission of Nature’s Nursery 
  • Rabies vaccination helpful, but not necessary 

 

Time Commitments:  

  • 4 hours per week usually 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

I understand that handling wildlife is potentially dangerous because they are wild animals whose actions are unpredictable regardless of past behavior. If I should elect to handle animals, I assume all risks of handling animals including, but not limited to, being bitten, clawed, or otherwise injured.
I understand that this application does not create a contract for my volunteer service. I understand that if accepted, I am obliged to comply with any and all current and subsequently adopted policies. I understand that if accepted, my volunteer service may be dismissed at any time for any reason, with or without notice. I understand that no person is authorized to change any of the terms mentioned in this application.
