Rehab-Avian Volunteer



The purpose of this program is to care and feed for injured or orphaned songbirds, in and out of quarantine. This position may be done at the Schadel Road location, the Dutch Road location, or off-site at a staff member’s or foster’s house. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Food prep 
  • Feed baby birds at 30-minute intervals (tong or tube fed) 
  • Clean cages 
  • Follow proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and quarantine protocols 
  • Restock 
  • Communicate with staff frequently 
  • Ability to handle death 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • At least 18 years’ old 
  • Attend Volunteer Orientation and training once per year 
  • Able to read and follow directions 
  • Be able to drive their own car to program potentially with animals 
  • Must work well with others as well as independently 
  • Comfortable with seeing/handling feeder rodents and other feeder animals, often cut up 
  • Able to handle harsh animal smells and cleaning products  
  • Able to bend, squat, and lift/carry 10-15lbs comfortably 
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Up to date Tetanus vaccination 
  • Rabies vaccination not necessary, but would be helpful 
  • Be willing to adopt, support, and communicate the mission of Nature’s Nursery 

Time Commitments: 

  • 8:00 AM-12:00 PM, 4:00 PM-8:00 PM daily at least once a week
